River dance by floating puppets

Playful ancient myths from the rice paddies and duck ponds of Vietnam will come alive on the Canning River at the weekend, thanks to the renowned Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre from Hanoi.

The 1000-year-old art form Mua Roi Nuoc, meaning “puppets that dance on water”, has come to Perth for the first time in 13 years as the free headline act at the City of Canning’s Blessing of the River Festival.

Its three performances tomorrow at Kent Street Weir Park in Wilson also mark the 40th anniversary of normalised relations between Australia and Vietnam since the war in that country.

City of Canning arts officer John McLaughlin said the ancient form of puppetry reflected the spiritual side of Vietnamese life and would help draw attention to the beauty, fragility and spirituality of the Swan and Canning rivers.

The show would be performed on a floating pavilion, with the puppeteers hidden behind screens and moving the puppets with underwater rods to make them appear to dance on the water.

The show, performed at 1pm, 3pm and 5pm, is accompanied by Vietnamese musicians playing traditional instruments.

The company’s wood-carving and performance traditions were jealously guarded, Mr McLaughlin said.

“We have a large multicultural base in Canning so that’s why we have programmed these activities,” he said.
