In 257 B.C., Thuc Phan An Duong Vuong came to the throne as successor to the 18 Hung Kings. Then, he moved the capital to Co Loa on the Red River delta. During the 15 years or constructing the spiral-shaped citadel, the people of Au Lac Kingdom had to struggle against many destructive forces who obstructed the process. Despite difficulties, the Co Loa Citadel was finally completed with assistance of the Golden Turtle. However, as the people started enjoying a happy and prosperous life, King An Duong Vuong indulged himself with luxury and sensual pleasure. He failed to remain vigilant against Trieu Da’s plot and ignored the advice from his good assistant, General Cao Lo. He divulged the national secret which led to the loss of the Kingdom. The death of King An Duong Vuong and his daughter, princess My Chau, at the foot of Mo Da pass closes the puppet play “Legend of the Co Loa Citadel”. This is the lesson on the failure to keep vigilant, which is still valuable for us even to day.
